Self Managed Care

Self-managed care is a method of service that allows clients and their families to have control over their care. Services include personal care, home support services and respite care. Services are based on your home care assessment.

  • Personal care includes assistance with personal hygiene, dressing, toileting, mobilization and transferring, eating, oral care and medication management.
  • Home support services include services, such as assistance with preparing meals, homemaking, and recreation activities.
  • Respite care includes day, evening or night care to give unpaid caregivers (generally family) a break from caregiving.

Self-managed care funds cannot be used for any other purposes.

Professional services, such as nursing, social work or therapy services cannot be purchased with self-managed care funds but will be arranged by the home care case manager, if needed.

If you were to undertake self-managed care on your own, here are the steps you would need to take:

  • You or your legal representative will talk to Alberta Health Services Case Manager who will assess and determine the monthly funding.
  • You or your legal representative must ensure all the forms are completed, signed and submitted to AHS
  • The complexity of choosing the right caregivers
  • Screening, training, scheduling and supervising caregivers
  • Being stranded when the caregiver does not show up for work, quits, calls in, or takes a vacation.
  • Manage payroll, including meeting CRA federal tax regulations and register for a business number (withholding income tax, CPP and EI)
  • Meet Alberta Employment standards
Record of employment (ROE) must be provided upon staff resignation or termination
  • Complete and submit reports to AHS to reconcile SMC funds received versus money spent on services on a quarterly basis.

If you were to hire Serenity Home Care Alberta, here are the limited steps you would need to take:

  • You or your legal representative will talk to Alberta Health Services Case Manager who will assess and determine the monthly funding.
  • You or your legal representative must ensure all the forms are completed, signed and submitted to AHS
  • Serenity Home Care Alberta will take care of the rest of the process. We will provide monthly invoices to track the hours and funding used.

Respite Services

Serenity Home Care Alberta provides relief for family caregivers – from a few hours a day to around-the-clock care. Our caregivers are trained to tend to the needs of your loved ones while you attend to other responsibilities and obligations, or just relax for a while to rejuvenate yourself. We understand that serving as the sole care provider for a loved one can be a rewarding experience, but it can also be a stressful, demanding responsibility, especially when it is in addition to raising children or working a full-time job. Family members do not need to let non-stop caregiving take a toll on their physical and emotional health.

Services are available at all levels of care from companionship and homemaking to nursing care
